Certification
The Medication Administration Aides Certification program was created to meet Nebraska State-DHHS statute standards for the training and certification of Medication Administration Aides.
Subject Matter Expert
We had the privilege of working with Tanya, a licensed healthcare professional who served as our subject matter expert. Her expertise was instrumental in shaping the content, helping to develop clear, learner-centered scripts and materials that made complex topics easier to understand.
Tanya also brought the content to life through a video-based lecture series, sharing her real-world experience in a way that felt both approachable and practical. Her videos became a key part of the learning journey, supporting both the in-class competency practicum and the instructor-led training. Thanks to her contributions, learners were better prepared, more confident, and more engaged from start to finish.
Needs Assessment
Our audience included a wonderfully diverse group of adult learners, each bringing unique strengths and challenges to the table. English language skills varied widely, as did familiarity with technology. Some learners had minimal experience with computers, while others were more confident navigating digital tools.
With that in mind, we focused on designing learning experiences that were both accessible and adaptable. The program blended online and in-person components, supported by consistent teaching materials and clear, practical strategies that were effective across various learning environments.
But we knew content alone wasn’t enough. So we placed a strong emphasis on learner support and meaningful feedback areas that had been underdeveloped in the past. By creating a more responsive and encouraging learning environment, we helped learners feel seen, supported, and empowered to grow at their own pace.
Storyboard
Development
The training nurse guides learners through the Medication Aid Certification Program to ensure success.
First, they provide a comprehensive packet containing all course details, study materials, checklists, and practice exercises. This keeps everything organized and simplifies the learning process.
Next, they offer a clear program roadmap, outlining modules, goals, assessments, and deadlines. This helps learners stay on track and understand what to expect.
They also ensure continuous support through regular check-ins, feedback, and additional resources like videos and articles, keeping learners engaged and motivated.
Interactive elements like simulations, group discussions, and hands-on labs are also included. These activities make learning more engaging and practical.
Overall, the training nurse provides structured materials, a clear path, ongoing support, and interactive opportunities to ensure learners are well-prepared and confident in their roles.
Medication Aid Packet
Website Mock-up
As an instructional designer, I had the opportunity to shape the digital learning experience for the Medication Aide Certification Program from designing a clean, intuitive website mock-up to integrating content directly into their Learning Management System.
I focused on creating a layout that made sense for learners. Everything was thoughtfully organized course packets, interactive elements, and supplemental resources were all easily accessible and well-organized. The goal was to remove the stress of searching, allowing learners to stay focused on learning.
At the client’s request, I also stepped in to configure their Learning Management System (LMS), EasyLMS. Since they didn’t have an LMS administrator in place, I was happy to provide the support they needed for uploading content, setting up the course flow, and making sure the system ran smoothly behind the scenes. It was a great opportunity to blend design thinking with hands-on tech skills and to make a real difference in how the content reached and served its audience.
Project Insights
Project insights explore how the project is received, gather user feedback, and showcase the tools used for ongoing development.
-
The Certification Medication Aide program was designed specifically for Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) working in the field of developmental disabilities. These are the individuals on the front lines of care and supporting, advocating, and making a real difference in the lives of others every day. This training was built to meet their needs, honor their experience, and equip them with the knowledge and confidence to take on an even greater role in the care they provide.
-
Over time, we saw a steady increase in learner participation and proof that the program was not only reaching the right people, but resonating with them. Participants had the flexibility to choose between traditional in-person classes or a hybrid option, depending on what worked best for their schedules and learning styles.
One of the most inspiring outcomes? Learners for whom English was a second or even third language showed higher pass rates and stronger skills transfer than we’d seen in previous years. With the right support and a thoughtfully designed learning experience, they didn’t just succeed, they thrived.
-
The initial feedback from learners in the hybrid course was incredibly positive. Participants not only completed the program at a higher rate, they excelled. Completion and skills transfer success jumped by an impressive 92%, far surpassing previous outcomes.
Even more meaningful were the conversations learners had with the Nurse Consultants leading the training. Many shared that the hybrid format felt more accessible, more flexible, and perhaps most importantly, more enjoyable than traditional in-person classes. For some, it was the first time the learning experience truly fit their needs, not the other way around.
